We focus on five major priority areas: research and innovation; training and capacity strengthening; technical support to health programs; dissemination and use of evidence; and data protection and cybersecurity.
Research to improve Surveillance, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning methods
CESMEL Health is at the forefront of advancing the science of SMEL through research and development of innovative methods and tools. By fostering a robust data ecosystem and pioneering new concepts, theories, and tools, we elevate the standards of SMEL in the region. This priority program area will include:
- Establishing a data ecosystem, including data science, digital, and cyber security
- Developing and testing concepts, theories, and tools for Health Metrics
- Developing methods for monitoring, evaluation, and learning of health programs
- Modeling and predicting the effects of interventions on health outcomes
Training and Capacity Strengthening in Surveillance, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
CESMEL Health is committed to building robust local capacities through our comprehensive training and capacity-strengthening program in surveillance, monitoring, evaluation, and learning (SMEL). Our objective is to equip the current and future health leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge to drive significant health improvements in sub-Saharan Africa. This priority program area includes:
- Providing a platform for internships
- Organizing short courses
- Organizing Master of Science and PhD training in collaboration with interested universities
- Running workshops with Master of Science and PhD mentors
- Running workshops for health professionals in:
- Monitoring and Evaluation and Learning of health interventions
- Epidemiologic intelligence, which will include a strong component of diagnostics
Dissemination and use of evidence
In line with the CESMEL Health’s mission of improving health outcomes, the Centre will go beyond research, training, and evidence generation and actively engage with stakeholders, including governments and partners, to ensure that evidence generated is used to inform program performance and increase accountability. Activities under this priority area will include:
- Developing of tools and methods for better presentation of evaluation results
- Meeting with program implementers and partners
- Creating a platform with community of practice to facilitate inform discussion
- Conducting translational research
Support Health Programs
CESMEL Health provides technical assistance to countries on health programs, including data systems, research and service provision, in collaboration with local, regional and global partners. Specific components include:
- Heath system as a whole
- Health Management and Information System
- Epidemic intelligence
- Economic evaluation, including value for money
- Operation research
- Disease specific focus:
- Infectious Diseases, including emerging diseases
- Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD)
- Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD)
Data Protection and Cybersecurity
CESMEL Health prioritize top-tier data protection and cybersecurity in health programs to enhance and promote the development of secure digital health solutions and artificial intelligence. Activities will include:
- Developing and implementing robust cybersecurity frameworks
- Strengthening capacities and raising awareness among stakeholders
- Optimizing the use of digital tools for surveillance, evaluation, and response to epidemics and pandemics
- Conducting research and developing innovative digital health solutions, including artificial intelligence
