Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi is the Executive Director of the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). She has been with APHRC for over 15 years, initially joining as a post-doctoral fellow in 2006. Catherine holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and a Master of Science in Community Health and Health Management from the University of Heidelberg. Prior to her graduate studies, she studied medicine at Makerere University and worked as a medical officer in Western Uganda for three years.
She is a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences and a Joep Lange Chair at the University of Amsterdam, focusing on chronic disease management in African countries. Additionally, she co-directs the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa, fostering research leadership in the continent.
With a strong commitment to African development, Catherine serves on various boards and committees, including the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health and the Lancet–SIGHT Commission on Peaceful Societies Through Health and Gender Equality. Her research interests lie in bridging the gap between non-communicable diseases and health system responsiveness, emphasizing evidence-informed decision making with African perspectives at the forefront.
